LOCAL AREA PHUKET
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, covering an area of about 543 square kilometers ¬ about the same size as Singapore ¬ measuring 48km from north to south and 21km from west to east at its widest point. The island, which is connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge, is also a province in its own right, and though it is the smallest province in Thailand, it is also the next wealthiest after Bangkok. The only urban area of any size is also called Phuket; recently granted city status, it is located in the southeast of the island. With its excellent beaches, wide range of accommodation and top-class restaurants, Phuket has become firmly established in the last couple of decades as one of Asia's premier beach resorts.
Karon Beach
Karon Beach is one of the best beaches for water fun. Here the sea is calm throughout the dry season and the sand is fine and powdery. Karon Beach has merged with Kata Beach to the south and now resembles a quieter version of Patong Beach.
Karon Beach is very long, 5km (3 miles), with fine white sand that squeaks when you walk on it throughout its entire length. At the north end, in front of the lake, the beach is usually deserted, making it a great spot to go if you want the beach to yourself.
In the Northeast monsoon season (November to April) there are very few waves and the water becomes crystal clear. In the Southwest monsoon season (May to October) there can be heavy swell.
